From 2019 to 2020, CPA introduced a two-year research project “ Institution Building ” encompassing short-term residencies, workshops, and lecture series. It is directed towards the shifting role of institutions throughout Asia. As institutional construction rapidly grows, CPA research platform is dedicated to reshaping institutional imagination to better confront the emerging challenges and engage in dialogues with innovative systems within the region.
As a non-profit organization, RAM has reflected on various possibilities in institutional establishment and the meanings inherent in these possibilities, informed by its own course of evolution. The research topic Institution Building is deliberately chosen after such introspection. We emphasize that institutions should no longer be viewed as physical spaces solely for fast-paced exhibition production, but rather as intermediate zones offering increasing creativity and possibilities. Balancing production and the pursuit of creation, challenge, and innovation, our aim is to discover, understand, and rethink alternative methods of institution-building and practical experience within different contexts across Asia. Through CPA, we invite institutional and independent curators, researchers, and artists from both domestic and international backgrounds to exchange opinions, share case studies, refer to each other, and engage in stimulating discussions on topics such as art intervention in society, alternative education, art history construction, and trans-regional cultural study.
2019-2020年，CPA推出为期两年的研究计划“打开机构”，包括短期驻地、工作坊和系列讲座，聚焦于亚洲各地机构角色的变化。在机构建设快速成长的态势下，CPA研究平台致力于重塑机构想象，以更好地应对出现的全新挑战，并与本地区中的创新体制展开对话。
“打开机构”是上海外滩美术馆作为非盈利性机构，在自身转型的基础上重新思考建立机构的各种可能性以及与之相关的意义后选择的研究主题。当我们强调机构不再作为高速生产展览的物理空间，而是拥有更多创造性、可能性的中间地带，在放下生产与追求创造、挑战和创新之间，我们希望发现、学习、借鉴、重新思考散落于亚洲各地不同语境下各种另辟蹊径的机构建立方式和实践经验。通过CPA平台，我们邀请了来自国内外的机构策划人、独立策划人、研究员和艺术家，从艺术介入社会、替代教育、艺术史建构与跨地域文化研究等议题出发，为他们搭建可以各抒己见、分享案例、相互参照及对话的平台。
