About the Event
In the talk, Amy Lien and Harry Burke will be jointly responding to the CPA research theme of ‘Institution Building’. Assessing various case studies in Asia, their presentation will explore points of difference and convergence shared between large-scale institutional structures and self-organized collectives. They will begin by discussing some of the ways in which museums in Asia have assumed the role of defining contemporary art in the region. They will then address how collectives are challenging this narrative, with particular attention given to the foregrounding of community as an aesthetic frame. Among the examples of collectivised practices in Southeast Asia that they will consider are Pasirputih, who have responded to the problematic tourism economy in Lombok, Indonesia, and the artist-activist group SAKA, whose work has been developed in the context of agrarian reform campaigns in the Philippines. These case studies will be expanded upon through experiences shared from their ongoing collaborative practices, such as Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho’s recent project “Alternatives to Land” - an experimental seminar, produced in collaboration with Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, that sought to position the museum in relation to regional and global land struggles. Throughout, Lien and Burke will ask how institutional resources can be used to generate solidarity among non-institutional projects, and contribute to alternative terrains for art and notions of contemporaneity to emerge from.
