18:00 Reception

19:00 Performance

20:00 Discussion: "The Spiritual/Material Divide" by Dr. Priya Srinivasan and Nunu Kong

Both Indian and Chinese cultures have an understanding of the third eye. Hindu tradition associates the third eye with the AGNA Chakra. Taoism claims that the third eye is one of the main energy centers of the body. Seeing beyond duality of body/mind, of the spiritual and the material, feeling beyond seeing, and experiencing through the third eye is the goal of this performance. It is also about feminine experience of this third eye.

In Indian artistic forms there is no difference between music, yoga/dance, and text. They all work together. The written text in the forms of poems is set to a raga (melody) and tala (rhythm) and the moving body then visualizes the music through dance. Using classical Indian dance and music vocabulary, ancient and contemporary oral, written and digital texts, the group presents postmodern, experimental work to see how performance and communication bridges can be created between India and China bringing the past, present, and future into conversation.

The collective brings together musicians, dancers, artists, and scholars trained in India, Malaysia, and Australia who currently reside in Shanghai and features local Shanghainese guest artists.

The event is supported by Consulate General of India Shanghai.
