The Chinese Connection: French artists and intellectuals respond to China

Speaker: Professor Sarah Wilson (Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London)

Language: English with Chinese translation

Admission Free. Reservation is required.

Continuing a long and complex tradition, China was explored as both a real and imaginary territory by French artists and intellectuals during the twentieth century. This lecture looks at the voyage of writer and tachiste painter Henri Michaux, who wrote A Barbarian in Asia, 1933, photographer Henri-Cartier-Bresson, whose From One China to the Other, was published with a preface by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in 1954; at Sartre's trip in 1955 with his feminist companion, Simone de Beauvoir, at the 1974 trip of the ‘Tel Quel’ philosophers, Roland Barthes, Philippe Sollers, Julia Kristeva, with art critic Marcelin Pleynet, and finally at artist Daniel Dezeuze of the ‘Supports-Surfaces’ group, whose work was profoundly affected both before and after his voyage in the early 1980s. The exhibition ‘Alors, La Chine?’ (Pompidou Centre, 2003) where contemporary art confronted traditional crafts (collected in China by François Dautresme), will provide a Chinese mirror for their adventures. New in-depth Chinese scholarship on Michaux and Sartre will be a special feature.

Entirely based on French-language sources, this presentation will translate for the first time hitherto inaccessible material for a new Chinese audience.

Professor Sarah Wilson teaches modern and contemporary art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. From 2012-2013 she holds a chair of excellence at the CHCSC (Centre for the cultural history of contemporary societies) at the University of Versailles-Saint Quentin. Her funded research project, including China, 'Globalisation before globalisation: modernisms, academies, revolutions' is supported by the Marie Curie RBUCE-UP project within the PATRIMA laboratory.
