Invited to China by Shanghai’s online bookshop 99read, young British author Simon Van Booy is here to share his writing experiences and love-related stories. He is making a guest appearance at Shanghai’s Sunday Reading Club, holding a dialogue with Chinese writer Tao Lixia and meeting readers in Ningbo. Tao Lixia is a youth novelist, travel writer and literature translator.

About Simon Van Booy
Born in London in 1975, Van Booy grew up in rural Wales and Oxford. At university in Kentucky, USA, he developed a passion for the works of American poets like Whitman and Emerson and he was encouraged by his professor to write poems and short stories. He returned to the UK and obtained a Masters.
Van Booy has published two collections of short stories: The Secret Lives of People in Love (the Chinese edition was published by Shanghai People’s Publishing House in July 2009) and Love Begins in Winter. The latter was awarded the prestigious Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, worth €35,000,in 2009.
Van Booy was editor-in-chief on a series of books on philosophy, including Why We Fight, Why We Need Love and Why Our Decisions Don’t Matter. His first full-length novel, Everything Beautiful Began After, was published in 2011. The Chinese edition will soon be published jointly by 99read and People’s Literature Publishing House.
Love is always the primary theme in his novels: the power of love in overcoming tragedy, the desire for love, the essence of love, and how love is handed down from generation to generation.
Currently living in New York, Van Booy is a contributor to the New York Times, New York Post, the UK’s Daily Telegraph and The Times. He writes a column for the Chinese men’s fashion magazine ELLE MEN. His work has been translated into more than a dozen languages.
Additionally, he is a lecturer at New York School of Visual Arts and Long Island University, and is part of a humanitarian project for teenagers.

西蒙·范·布伊1975年生于伦敦，在威尔士乡村和牛津长大，大学时迷上橄榄球，成为美国肯塔基州一所大学的橄榄球队员。在那儿，经由一位英语教授介绍，爱上了惠特曼、爱默生美国诗人的作品，而另一个英语教授则鼓励他写诗和创作短篇小说。之后，他回到英国，辗转几所大学，获得艺术硕士学位。他曾旅居巴黎和雅典。
西蒙·范·布伊已出版两部短篇小说集《因为。爱》（The Secret Lives of People in Love，中文版已由上海人民出版社于2009年7月出版）和《爱，始于冬季》。《爱，始于冬季》荣获2009年度弗兰克·奥康纳国际短篇小说奖，奖金３５０００欧元。这是目前国际文坛奖金额度最高、最重要的短篇小说奖。
西蒙·范·布伊还主编过一套哲学读物，包括《为什么我们战斗》（Why We Fight）、《为什么我们需要爱》（Why We Need Love）、《为什么我们的决定不重要》（Why Our Decisions Don’t Matter）。他的首部长篇小说《美，始于怀念》（Everything Beautiful Began After）于2011年出版，中文版即将由99读书人、人民文学出版社联合出版。
