Shuang Li’s new book, I’m Not, was born alongside her first institutional solo exhibition of the same name at the Swiss Institute in New York. In her exhibition, Li draws from her own experience as a fan to reflect on how technology shapes social bonds, material culture, and the complexities of building a world based on fervent love for something distant. These ideas extend into the book, further exploring digital intimacy, displacement, and mediated identity in a hyperconnected world. Through video, installation, and performance, she captures the intersections of personal experience and global infrastructure. Using fragmented storytelling and poetic expression, I’m Not examines how technology shapes selfhood, desire, and social interaction. Layering text and imagery, the book continues Li’s exploration of the blurred boundaries between the virtual and the real, offering a nuanced portrait of contemporary digital existence.
In this conversation, X Zhu-Nowell, Director and Chief Curator of the Rockbund Art Museum, and Stefanie Hessler, Director of the Swiss Institute, will join Shuang Li, to talk about her artistic practice, her relationships with institutes, and the heart she has hidden within this bow-knot-wrapped publication.
