Introduction
Clare Dolan will speak about the Bread and Puppet Theater’s 50 year history as one of the United State’s oldest self-supporting experimental theater companies. Bread and Puppet is internationally acclaimed for its use of massive larger-than-life puppets, vigorous community participation, masks, effigies, group choreographies, and elements of the landscape to create giant outdoor shows. The theater is also recognized for its indoor performances with puppets, paintings and masked dancers, which often address social or political themes. Clare will discuss Bread and Puppet’s methods of creating theater with massive community participation, and describe how Peter Schumann’s everyday life, this production of puppet shows and his artistic output of paintings, artists books, pamphlets and manifestos are all shaped and motivated by his unique moral vision and philosophy of cheap art.
