The formation and maintenance of a collective memory is necessary for the existence of a social group. Disasters and wars provide critical opportunities of fostering identity awareness and collective memories, which help a political regime or geographic entity achieve stronger acceptation among the community, successfully consolidating the regime’s legitimacy with increased moral and political strengths, or optimizing the solidarity within the entity. In this talk, the speaker will elaborate on the complicated interactions between different social forces during the formation of memories of disasters and wars.
