Bangkok-based architecture practice all(zone) directed and curated the second edition of RAM assembles—the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai’s biennial festival of architectural thinking. This year’s edition, themed “Shanghai Picnic,” adopted the idea of a picnic as a grounded, open-ended, flexible, and collective framework to foster new conversations about how we build, how we live, and how we adapt. Through artist-led co-creation workshops, performances, and public talks, the festival offered a space for coming together—for listening, exchanging, and building new ways of being in common. Over two weeks, these events unfolded across the ROCKBUND neighborhood, encouraging collaboration, experimentation, and community engagement.

When AI came, what value did manual labor still hold? How could we build trust and emotions with a person or a place? What role did manual and emotional work play in public life? David Graeber, in his book Bullshit Jobs, divided jobs into two categories: one was the meaningless jobs that many people were doing, and the other was the work really necessary for society but that no one wanted to do, such as garbage collection and toilet cleaning. This was called "Care Work," which "Rag God Workshop" reminded people to notice. It was equivalent to the household affairs of the entire city. These workers actually took care of the city and maintained its operation every day. Cleaners in the city usually work 12 to 15 hours a day with no fixed days off. Most of them were women. These workers often blended into the background of the urban scene, but people thought of them when they lost their belongings, pets, or family members. It turned out they were not just hard-working workers, but also, in a sense, sociologists. They had sharp eyes for the people, events, and things around them because they touched and sensed the environment with their whole being. Rag God of City Carersfocused on people who were in direct contact with the streets, walls, and facilities in the ROCKBUND area—the workers doing street cleaning, toilet cleaning, garbage disposal, and security jobs. In line with RAMa’s theme Shanghai Picnic, the workshop invited participants to collaborate with these "care workers" to explore the possibilities of public life.
