Night @ RAM welcomes Dutch artist/architectural photographer Rubén Dario Kleimeer and Dutch critic on architecture and urban design Harry den Hartog, in a presentation and discussion on 'Disappearing Rural Shanghai' moderated by Professor Gu Zheng.

Rubén Dario Kleimeerinitiates photographic projects on urban landscapes and public spaces. In 2006 he started the ongoing project 'Chongming Island.' While taking part in an exchange program at Tongji University he set out to research the announced renewal on the rural island where Dongtan ecocity was once planned. At the time construction started on a sixlane highway branching of off the outerring road leading into the tunnel and bridge which connect Chongming to the mainland. A prestigious project finished prior to the 2010 World Expo. Continued with intervals up until today, the large format photographs put into perspective and debate the developments on the island.

Harry den Hartogdid a research on the urbanization of the countryside round Shanghai. Each year, more than 15 million Chinese leave the rural areas of China and move to the cities. This figure exceeds 300,000 in the case of Shanghai. Before 2015, the majority of China’s population will be living in urban areas. His book ‘Shanghai New Towns’ documents and analyses the meteoric rate of urbanization of the countryside round Shanghai, most particularly the part played there by new towns and new villages. This book shows how the plans have been put into practice, what daily life looks like and how these new cities function within the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Area as a whole.
