The Rockbund Art Museum has appointed Paris-based architecture office Roll to transform the sixth-floor space into a reference library dedicated to Asian and global contemporary art. This new space not only extends the historical context of the building itself but also aligns with the museum’s role as a hub for knowledge polymerization and rigorous research.

The library is now officially open to the public. Its collection spans various fields, including art, theory, history, and independent publications. Moving forward, it will prioritize exhibition catalogues and independent publications as core collection focuses, aiming to create an inclusive space for the public to read, reflect, explore, and write.

In tandem with the library’s launch, the museum has also inaugurated the “Reader & Resident” program, through which one to two artists are invited annually to undertake residencies. The residents will help enrich the collection while organizing a series of related public programs. The inaugural resident of the “Reader & Resident” program is Fung Junhua. Fung Junhua is an editor and writer. His work centers on fostering the creation of collectives, experimental practices, and the reimagining of media languages within shared knowledge contexts.

Fung was born in 1984 in Yangjiang, from 2004 to 2016, he worked at Libreria Borges & CANTONBON in Guangzhou, and later at HB Station Contemporary Art Research Center (2016–2022). He has also helped initiate and shape several alternative spaces, including the QianTai_osf, and binn (BianZhan). Fung is the founder of Fuben Publishing, a long-time member of Theater 44 and TongShi Editorial Committee, and co-initiator of Folded Room and Yi Qi Lian Gong (Energy Waving Collective). In 2019, he co-founded the Glass House Project, a publishing and translation initiative focused on Southeast Asian thought and literature, including works by Pramoedya Ananta Toer.

Roll is an architecture and design practice based in Paris and Bayonne. Founders Lucie Rebeyrol and Ian Ollivier met in 2016 while working in New York. The studio works at the intersection of architecture, exhibition design, and art. We create forms and spatial experiences seeking the fine balance between rigor and freedom, function and experience, immediate objectives and possible futures. We have a predilection for sensory architecture and a fondness for the ordinary.
