What makes a city human? In an increasingly standardised built environment shaped by radical industrialisation and modernisation, informal practices, such as street vendors, mark a distinct social and economic phenomenon shared by countries like China and Thailand. These practices represent improvisational ways of working, living, and functioning that coexist with planetary technological transformations yet remain deeply rooted in our own cultural contexts.

Drawing from the title Yan Huo Qi - the “Qi of smoke and fire,” which evokes the bustling vitality of a place through the sizzle of woks, chatter, bargaining, and laughter, this program brings together artists, architects, scholars, and street vendor owners to collectively explore the past, present, and future of informal practices as a form of collective wisdom that embraces geographical, cultural, and ecological heterogeneity.

The event comprised two sessions. The first session featured a panel discussion on street food, including architect Kraipol Jayanetra (Alkhemist Architects), part of the team behind the street vendors designed specifically for RAMa’s open square; scholar Anna Greenspan, creator of Movable Feasts, a digital humanities project mapping Shanghai’s street food; Yini Jiang, owner of Feral Bahn Mi; as well as co-curators Dream Chittmittrapap and Feifei Zhou. The second session focused on the work of artist and researcher Mao Chenyu, particularly his experimental multimedia series Paddyfilm that documents his fieldwork in rural China, and was moderated by co-curator Feifei Zhou.

From street food to farming, from eating to growing, the symposium re-examined how informal practices can inspire visions and possibilities of a post-industrial future through collective wisdom.

Feifei Zhou is a Chinese-born spatial and visual designer, and the founder of spatial design studio terriStories. Her work explores spatial, cultural, and ecological impacts of the industrialised built and natural environment. Using narrative-based spatial analysis, she collaborates extensively with social and natural scientists to translate empirical observations and scientific research into visual representations.

Dream Chittmittrapapis a spatial designer and artist with a multidisciplinary background in architecture and interactive design. After nearly a decade in the UK, Dream founded Fiction Practice, a narrative-driven spatial design studio based between Bangkok and London. She is also the co-founder of X-cessive Aesthetics, a London-based interdisciplinary design collective exploring the boundaries of identity, image and spatial culture.

Anna Greenspan is Associate Professor of Global Contemporary Media at NYU Shanghai. She is also a Director of NYU Shanghai's Center of Al and Culture. Her research focuses on urban futures and emerging media. Anna teaches courses in media theory, philosophy of technology and urban studies in the program for Interactive Media Arts.

Kraipol Jayanetra/Alkhemist Architects is a design studio founded by a group of designers who believe that a better society embraces fluidity in diversity. We see design not just as an aesthetic pursuit, but as a practical tool for interaction, exchange, and mutual learning, From carts to courtyards, we create spaces that engage evervday life while allowing differences to coexist, overlap, and evolve.

Mao Chenyu, author of the Paddy film series, has long been working in the Dongting Lake region. In recent years, he established the Paddyfilm-Farm and initiated the Elaphurus davidianus University project.
