Computer Graphics emerged about half a century ago. It is dedicated to exploring the making of graphics and images with the assistance of computers. Back then, it would take a creator a whole year to make a two-minute computer animation. After about 20 years of development, since the 1990s, computer vision technology began to be widely used in film and television production. Since 2000, computer animation has become a mainstream type of animated film. The history of AI generating paintings, animations, etc., can also be traced back to technologies like computer graphics. Today, the rapid development of various AI technologies opens up various new possibilities for film and television production by the use of computers. We find more and more AI tools that can assist us in telling stories. For example, the computer is able to generate a video upon the instruction of a fine textual description.

In the exhibition "WangShui: poiesis" presented by Rockbund Art Museum, WangShui's process usually involves collaboratively generating images with artificial intelligence (AI). Here, the artist presents a mix of paintings made with AI and others made without, engaging equally with various other elements such as atmospheric conditions and historical research. This exhibition attempts to divert the audience's attention to the artist's creative process and the progress in a broader time and space; it tries to introduce a new perception that cannot be seized by the visible "results", and to ask its audience: How do we break through our conventional understanding of AI, language, and images and place these elements on the artist's workbench?

We invited three instructors from "二十面体 (a magazine)" to bring us the workshop on April 15 (Saturday). In the sharing and workshop, the instructors will start from the history of computer graphics, introduce the possibilities that various AI technologies bring to image creation, and bring everyone to make AI animations and experience the process of generating content in collaboration with AI.

About the Event

This Saturday night join us for an “AI Ghost and Image Making” workshop conducted by three instructors from the Icosa Magazine, HE Shan, Tony YET, and ZHANG Tianqi, who will take us onto a journey of computer graphics and the world of AI, language, and images. In 1975, Martin Newell, among the first generation of computer graphics researchers, sketched out some coordinates for a teapot and generated the first digital teapot model using Bézier curves on a computer. 🫖🫖🫖 Today, computer graphics continue to bring more ideas and creativity to life. WangShui's process of #machinepainting, which involves collaboratively generating images with artificial intelligence (AI), is profoundly explored in the #poiesis exhibition. It tilts our attention towards the artist's creative process and a perceptual methodology that is not directly guided by a visible "result." The exhibition raises questions about how to break through one's perception framework of AI, language, and images, and place these elements on the artist's workbench.Together, we will have an intimate encounter with AI in this workshop to gain a deeper understanding of the possibilities that technology offers for creative expression!
