“To my friend z.k ‘The High fidelity recording of the original 78's shellac’ Ripping” is a newly commissioned experimental sound performance by artist Zheng Ke and independent musician 1334. For both of them, Shanghai-POP embodies the traces of history and local landscape, resembling a vast soundscape resonating with ghostly echoes. They delve into the archival sounds of the era and the city, akin to travelers using soundscape materials from different times and spaces—be it shopping malls, streets, hotels, or elevators—slowly transporting the listeners through the daily auditory experience to the past modern era. The audiences, in turn, are invited to weave together their own experiences and on-site perceptions to complete the imaginings of this sonic journey narrative.

Guests:

Zheng Ke (b. Huai’an, 1992) currently lives and works in Jingdezhen and Shenzhen. His artistic practice includes sound, video, and installation. His work often explores unpredictable and suspended boundaries and feelings through sound and image. Zheng Ke is fascinated by researching the sensory imagery of otherworldliness in the urban hinterland and everyday scenes of the night, and the clear but disjointed and treacherous moods of the new grotesque. With the combined effect of hearing, vision, and material, he specializes in dissociating and reshaping commonplace objects and the emotions that arise instantly in familiar scenes, breaking their original forms and inherent constraints, and generating feelings of strangeness and dismay. Zheng Ke's works have been exhibited at the X Museum in Beijing, and the Beijing Macalline Centre of Art.

1334 (b. Shantou, 1988) is an independent musician who currently lives and works in Beijing. He has been a part of the band Gastsby In A Daze, as well as several solo projects such as Mei Yu, cathodic, and lonelybabys, and has also composed soundtracks for short films and independent films. Known for the neo-psychedelic rock trend, he later attempted to recreate the soundscape of coastal cities in the early nineties with sampling, synthesizers, and ethnic instruments and explored and experimented with the pentatonic scale as the framework for compositions that are free of modulation and noise.
