The Seeing the City Mapping Workshop is organised by Urban Noise and provide a city observation toolkit based on Jan Gehl’s Public Space Quality Assessment System. It engaged the public in research on public life by documenting how people spontaneously use streets, squares, and other public spaces around the ROCKBUND area during RAM assembles. Participants also observed interactions with artistic installations, revealing real needs that designers might not have anticipated. Together, we co-created the ROCKBUND Public Space Observation Report.

Jan Gehl's public space quality assessment system is a core tool for human-centred urban design. This approach combines theoretical foundations from the field of urban design and anthropological field research methods. It allows the public to actively participate in the planning, design, and evaluation of public spaces through real-world behaviour data. This simple and direct involvement serves as an important feedback mechanism for urban decision-makers.

At the end of the workshop, we invited people from various backgrounds to share their experiences, observations, and insights about the space.
