On 30 and 31 March 2024, The AUUUUDITORIUM at the Rockbund Art Museum presented Rendering Zhenze: Diadromous In Spring (2024), a newly commissioned performance by artist Payne Zhu. This sound, visual and gastronomical experience transformed AUUUUDITORIUM as a spiritual abode that propels one to reconsider the question of value. Referencing Wu vernacular novels (吴语列传), the performance explores the nomadic nature of amphibious creatures, the feminist resistance of the Jiangnan region, and the exchange frontier of sea-land collision in Shanghai. The Yangtze River Delta, where Shanghai is situated, was formed due to the constant accumulation of sediment carried by the river system. Under the flooding of moving images accompanied by music composed by the artist and Sun Dasi, Zhu narrates the spirit of fish swimming against the current and speculates the incalculable debt while consuming dishes with the audience alongside the other performer Zheng Haozhong. Rendering Zhenze de-financializes the act of exchange, decentralizes dominant language and belief systems, and reclaims the value of different bodies of water. The artist will continue his endeavor in searching for an alternative economy and critically examine the attention economy rendered by platforms that algorithmically encourage vicious competition and financial bidding through this project.

Artists:

Payne Zhu (b. 1990, Shanghai) is a graduate of the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. He probes into different economic systems and works between the rheology of finance, competing bodies and the flooding of images, celebrating the unmatchable nature of the subject through the mismatch of different technological media. He has held a solo exhibition at OCAT Shanghai (2022) and performance lectures at vortex@The Cloister Project, Shanghai (2022); HOW Art Museum, Shanghai (2019); Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai (2015). Zheng Haozhong (b.1985, Rizhao) works and lives in Shanghai. He is an artist and writer. Zheng Haozhong's paintings complement his literary works and improvisational music in his artistic practice. His paintings deconstruct, reconstruct, and fuse elements such as familiar friends, objects that have been part of his indoor environment for a long time, and landscapes that evoke empathy within his vision. They construct the artist's outward expressions. His solo exhibitions include “Melodic Variations”, Blindspot Gallery (2023), “Indoor Enclosure, Sub-Alto Saxophone, Drum Roll, Saw, Voice Silence Turns into A Major Musical Phrase”, BANK/MABSOCIETY, Shanghai (2023), "13854", Gallery Weekend Beijing (2021), "TAKI", BANK/MABSOCIETY, Shanghai (2019), and "Sun shining on Zhujiajiao", KWM artcenter, Beijing (2018). He won the Grand Prize in the 2014 John Moores Painting Prize (China), and the winning work has been exhibited at the National Museums Liverpool in the UK, as well as toured in Beijing, Shanghai, Macau, and other places.

郑皓中 Zheng Haozhong(1985年出生于日照)目前工作与生活于上海。
