About the Event

On the fifth floor of RAM displays pixels series (2015-) by the artist Tobias Rehberger, which invites the audience to identify pixelated consuming icons composed of monochromatic mosaic tiles. In this series, the pixelated artworks drew inspiration from different sources. Inspired by Shunga (traditional Japanese pornography), for instance, one of the mosaicked images Tobias Rehberger created for Fondation Beyeler, was exhibited at Art Basel Miami in 2015.

Besides Tobias, many other artists have also used elements from mass culture to reproduce images, and appropriation and irony are the most common strategies adopted in modern and contemporary art. The speaker will present how appropriation and irony are employed by analyzing Manet’s The Luncheon on the Grass, Olympia and In the Conservatory, as well as other examples of Pop artworks. Compared to the more apparent appropriation and irony in Pop art, these techniques are used in modern art in a more subtle and elegant manner, showcasing that modernism critically absorbed the taste and essence of classical art.
