Could you make it home without a mobile phone?

Uncle Pan, aged 72, has a wish to live a long life, so he tries his best to avoid exposure to air conditioning, never stays up late, and eats a steamed boiled egg every day. Yet he has been smoking for 53 years.

Is “losing fat” the same as “losing weight?” What about exercise and physical training? Are they the same?

If I have to cultivate a new habit while breaking an old one over the next 22 days, what will these two habits be?

The words “I will not give up!” is what I say to myself when I am upset or desperate, or I don’t want to give in to reality even if it is challenging or brutal. When does your “I will not give up” come out of your tongue?

Nunu Kong has invited her friend Jess Chiayi Seetoo and workshop participants to join this round table discussion, which is intended to interpret, question and reflect on the theme “Bodies” from multiple perspectives based on personalized and hands-on experiences of life in the kaleidoscope-like society.

About the Speaker 关于讲者

Working as a choreographer, performing artist and an independent producer, Nunu Kong develops through her work a characteristic expression playing with time and space in poetic and illusionary dimensions in both visual and dramaturgic levels with a particular sense of humor instinctively blended into her choreography. Her recent projects include Trumpet Upside Down Dancing in Air - a series of endurance performance actions where she tests her body limitations and reassesses the physics of sound by attempting to play a trumpet while suspending herself upside-down from significant height.

Nunu Kong graduated from Beijing Dance Academy. She began her choreographic career in Shanghai as one of the founders of the “Zuhe Niao” collective, which she co-founded in 2005. Following their first award wining piece Tongue’s Memory of Home at Theaterspektakel Festival in Zurich in 2006, in 2007 she established her own independent dance project “BrandNuDance” which has become one of China’s most innovative experimental performing arts exchange platforms. Promoting experimental dance as a new and vital medium in contemporary art, she has produced numerous international dance productions, commissions, workshops, lectures and presents Chinese independent performing artist’s work beyond the underground.

Jess Chiayi Seetoo is a researcher and creator of performance arts. She obtained her PhD in performance study from University of California, Berkeley. She is a member of board of directors of the Performance Studies international(PSi) and a lecturer at Shanghai Theatre Academy. Her study and works cover a wide range of areas including Tanztheater, physical theatre, documentary theater, impromptu dance, relationships between dance and human body, and (new) media. She has extensive experience of exploring the connection between linguistic signs and art performances. Her creative works and performances, along with public education activities organized by her in collaboration with museums in Shanghai, give a glimpse of her repeated efforts to pursue interdisciplinary creation and to define the relationship between environment and humanity. Her research papers are published in P[art]icipatory Urbanisms, Performing Arts Review, TDR: The Drama Review, and The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance.


吴艳丹毕业于北京舞蹈学院。2006年与上海数位多领域艺术家成立“组合嬲”艺术家联盟,继首个合作作品《舌头对家园的记忆》于瑞士Theater Spektakel艺术节获头等赞助奖项之后,她在2007年创建了自己的“不乱扭独立制作”项目,作为中国舞蹈界少有的实验性表演交流平台之一,她制作并策划了一系列高质量且别具一格地舞蹈专场发布,工作坊及演讲,并推广本土其它优秀的独立表演艺术家在国际艺术节中的展示交流。

司徒嘉怡 (Jess Chiayi Seetoo) 表演艺术研究-创作者,美国加州大学伯克利分校表演研究博士,国际人类表演学(Performance Studies international/PSi)学会理事,现任教于上海戏剧学院。研究创作涉及舞蹈剧场、肢体剧场、记录剧场、舞蹈/身体与(新)媒体、即兴舞蹈。长年穿梭于语言符号与身体经验之间,并持续探索跨领域创造与人-环境的关系,体现于曾与上海多所美术馆合作策划的公教项目,以及持续的艺术创作、合作与演出。发表学术与评论文章于P[art]icipatory Urbanisms (《城市艺术参与》论文集)、《PAR表演艺术》、TDR: The Drama Review(《戏剧评论》)、《艺术界LEAP》、The Routledge Companion to Butoh Performance(《Routledge 舞踏表演论文集》)等。
