About the Event

Lu Yang, a multimedia artist, has long been making efforts to understand human body from the perspective of neuroscience, as shown by her works featuring the concept of related technologies such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). In 2018, she introduced Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS), a technology developed by NTT DOCOMO and Osaka University, into her latest work Electromagnetic Brain Brainology! Brain Control Messenger! (Brain control messenger refers to a person who can take control of brain). Lu believes other parts of body will automatically be controlled if the brain is.

We are honored to invite Professor Hideyuki Ando from Osaka University to give this talk together with Lu Yang. They will begin with the usage of GVS in Lu’s works to discuss how advanced technologies contribute to present virtual reality in artworks, if human perception of real space depends on individual wills, how this perception can be changed, and how we can “save ourselves.”

About the Speaker

Lu Yang using a variety of media: video, installation, animation, and digital painting, game, the artist unflinchingly explores existential issues about the nature of life and where it resides. Armed with an overlaying mix of strategies taken from Science, Religion, Psychology, Neuroscience, Medicine, Games, Pop Culture and Music, among others, Lu Yang overrides the often delusional belief that humans control are privileged within this universe. Instead, she highlights the biological and material determinants of our condition reminding us of our transient and fragile existence, but with an edge of dark humor that leaves no room for sentimentality.

Lu Yang’s works have been featured in important group exhibitions at the UCCA (Beijing), Centre Pompidou (Paris), 56th Venice Biennale 2015 China Pavillion, 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, Liverpool Biennial 2016, Shanghai Biennale 2012, Montreal International Digital Art Biennial 2016, Musée d’art contemporain of Lyon, Momentum (Berlin), Tampa Museum of Art, The 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, etc. Solo exhibition such like: Tokyo Spiral, MWoods museum, MOCA Cleveland, UCCA, etc.

Hideyuki Ando is an associate professor at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University. He has made extensive studies on human illusion-based interfaces, related to virtual reality, sensation, consciousness and motion, as well as bionics. His belief that his studies and artistic presentation of technologies are beneficial to society showed him the path of creation in the first place. In 2008, he was awarded Excellence Prize at the Media Arts Festival by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. In 2009 and 2011, he received Honorary Mention (interactive art) two times from Ars Electronica, an Austrian cultural, educational and scientific institute.
