This lecture is an open discussion of early science fiction texts, covering "canons" from diverse cultures and "science fiction" elements in works not typically classified as such. Led by a contemporary Chinese science fiction writer, the audience embarks on adventurous journeys into the mental worlds of the following authors.

A contemporary sci-fi writer guided the audience through the following texts: the Czech play R.U.R. (1921) by Karel Čapek, which introduced the term "robot" to popular culture; the Japanese novel Seisei Kaishin Hen(1857), written by Confucian scholar Gesshū Iwagaki near the late Qing dynasty and with similar political aspirations; the Russian Red Star (1908) by Alexander Bogdanov, which projects political ideals on Mars, hosting advanced communist society; Johannes Kepler Kepler's Somnium(1608), which planned an early scientific exploration to the Moon—another frequent sci-fi locus; the Italian epic Orlando Furioso (1516), which shows lunar travel is not exclusively a sci-fi motif—perhaps the question is whether and how an epic can be "science fiction," bringing The Epic of Gilgamesh into the discussion. The lecturer invites the audience to reflect on how these "science fiction" writings emerged within their socio-historical contexts and what issues they sought to address.
