The inspiration for Playtime: A Tian Jing Cinema came from the outdoor plaza in front of the Rockbund Art Museum. This space evoked the structural memory of Tian Jing—a common feature in various traditional residential spaces in Shanghai. Enclosed on all sides yet dotted with small, accessible doors and exits, the Tian Jing served as both a junction between individual family units and the broader community, and a free, open-air haven. In the past, the Tian Jing—a living space that has nearly vanished—stirred up experiences of rural charm and community interaction: experiences that were vastly lacking yet immensely valuable in contemporary urban life. It was a space where people shared daily conversations, an episode of a TV show, or a film amid the fluid atmosphere of the outdoors. Most Shanghai locals once gathered in Tian Jings to do laundry, hang clothes out to dry, chat, cool off in the shade, play games, and tell stories. In times of material scarcity, people even huddled together in such shared open-air spaces to watch a black-and-white TV set fitted with a magnifying glass. It was this experience that we sought to recreate in an innovative way through Playtime: A Tian Jing Cinema.

During RAM assembles and within the installation of all(zone)'s Under the Common Sky, we set up several semi-open-air screen installations and screened five comedy films that focused on Shanghai's residential and urban spaces. Spanning from Street Angel (1937) to Shanghai Fever(1994), these screenings invited audiences to revisit and reflect on the transformations and continuities of local everyday life amid spatial changes and social shifts. The screening program is curated by Ag and kicked off with a talk on September 12, followed by twelve evening screenings. Whether audiences were outdoor film enthusiasts who came by reservation or passersby who wandered into this "Tian Jing" by chance, all felt welcome to sit down naturally and relax into this nostalgic comedy experience—rekindling memories, experiences, and innovative vitality related to such small, open-air community spaces.

The talk "Enclosure & Openness: The Publicity and Playfulness of Shanghai's Local Residential Spaces" featured Li Yingchun, Tang Weijie and was moderated by AG. They shared stories about the evolution of Shanghai's urban residential spaces since the city's opening as a treaty port. Covering architectural samples and living experiences deeply rooted in Shanghai's local identity—from the old walled city, local Jiao Quan Fang (courtyard houses with a square layout), Shi Ku Men (stone-gate houses), foreign-style lane houses, to workers’ new villages—the discussion explored the possibilities of public life, playfulness, and rustic charm in modern urban living.
