What is "Late Summer School"?
Beginning with artist research in March, each month's AUUUUDITORIUM is curated around a specific theme, featuring a variety of programs, from music and film to literature and moving images. The new movement of "study", launched this spring, reached its peak during the recently concluded summer night party. At the end of August, following a brief summer break, Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum proudly presents a new annual project, "Late Summer School," a key component of the 2024 AUUUUDITORIUM, which will run for three days. Recently, the Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum has focused on rekindling the profound connection between cultural institutions and knowledge. The aim is to transform the museum into a vibrant and interactive space, breaking away from traditional learning models to foster a community rich in creativity and inspiration. In the AUUUUDITORIUM, we view learning as a dynamic, collective journey, encompassing a diverse range of experiences including performances, lectures, dialogues, parties, dance, karaoke, dining, writing, and reading. The new project, "Late Summer School," seeks to explore radical pedagogical methods. In an era where independent knowledge production and exchange are often constrained, "Late Summer School" offers a platform for imagining alternative histories and future knowledge through specially designed courses with invited scholars. We look forward to embracing the end of each summer and inviting interested participants and speakers to engage in a dynamic and inclusive learning environment at the museum.
About Shanghai Inside/Out
Shanghai is profoundly entangled with the world, the world of the overseas but also the world of the hinterland. These observable links in every detail of the city life firmly associate Shanghai with cosmopolitanism. However broad-stroke isms more than often overshadow the trifles of daily life, relegating family histories, intimacies, sound, and smell to little importance. However, these palpitating details can never be erased. They have survived grand historiographies.
Shanghai Inside/Out invites artists, curators, dancers, scholars, writers and city inhabitants from Guizhou, Hong Kong, Brazil, and local Shanghai to stitch the myriad “feminine details” of Shanghai from the early 20th century onward through lectures, performances, screenings and discussions. The live-sung Yue Opera and the rhythmic 'Dí Dǔ' beats performed on-site traverse a century and gently resonate within the late summer school of the Rockbund Art Museum, weaving together the intricate harmonies of history and the present, to create a more expansive narrative framework and articulate a more specific colloquial vernacular that reconstructs resilient everyday life. By doing so, we hope to assemble a different kind of cosmopolitanism: petty and abundant, pretentious and tenacious ways of living-together.
*Note: 的笃班 (pronounced "dí dǔ bān") refers to an early nickname for Yue Opera that became popular in Shanghai in the 1920s. "Dí Dǔ" derives from the sound of the wooden clappers used by performers from Shengxian County, Zhejiang, during their rural performances at the genre's inception.
Curator
Zairong XIANG’s research, teaching, and curatorial practices engage with cosmology and cosmopolitanism in their culturally diverse, historically specific, and conceptually promiscuous manifestations in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Nahuatl. He teaches literature and art at Duke Kunshan University, and was co-curator of the 2021 Guangzhou Image Triennial, Ceremony (Burial of an Undead World) at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), and the 14th Shanghai Biennial Cosmos Cinema (2023-2024), among many other projects. He is working on two exhibition projects respectively in Hong Kong and Philadephia. Author of Queer Ancient Way: A Decolonial Exploration (punctum books), he is the editor of exhibition catalogues, journal special issues, and a film archive. He is currently completing his second book on “transdualism.” Through the concept of “shanzhai/counterfeit,” he continues a multifaceted research into the artistic and intellectual exchanges in the Global South, especially between Latin America and China since the nineteenth century.
