Brazilian granddaughter rethinks Orientalism,
The disappeared grandmother evokes female experiences
In the third act, Brazilian scholar Christine Greiner opens the dusty family archive to reconstruct and fabulate the scenarios of her Sino-German grandfatherworkingat the Bund. What kind of Orientalist imagination might her father - born and raised in Shanghai yet unable to speak Chinese - have acquired through the Hollywood films shown in the Grand Theatre and Cathay Cinema he frequented as a youngster? How might the fate of her mysteriously disappeared grandmother, of Australian, British, and Japanese descent, be intertwined with the experiences of countless women under the shadow of toxic masculinity?
