The forgotten Loggia of the Andrews & George Building, restored by David Chipperfield Architects in 2021, sits uneasily on a secondary façade, facing an alley and courtyard rather than proudly overlooking the street as tradition dictates. It feels like an incomplete architectural gesture, both inviting and constrained by historical context, spatial limitations, and pragmatic needs. For the second edition of RAM assembles: Shanghai Picnic, Tangent Essays imagined what this fragment might have become: a narrow, low platform that symbolically emerged from an unopened window on Yuanmingyuan Road and wove through obstacles to occupy and extend the loggia space.
This temporary structure envisioned the loggia’s unrealized potential as a truly public, communal threshold. It recalled architectural precedents where loggias offered shade, gathering, and generosity, such as Palazzo Rucellai, whose accessible benches embodied civic presence and public engagement. Like Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Floating Piers, it created a fleeting connection between inaccessible spaces, transforming absence into presence and inviting moments of pause and exploration.
The platform held a deliberate distance from the existing fabric: intimate enough to engage, yet never to impose. In this charged in-between, the forgotten loggia extended itself as a quiet gesture.
Organized by Tangent Essays, In Search of a Loggia was a three-part outdoor reading in-public seminar series that enacted collective reading as an urban assemblage—of voices, bodies, and texts. Each session took place beside a reimagined loggia, inviting 10 participants to read aloud—without prior preparation—carefully excerpted and recomposed textual fragments that reflected on walking as an embodied mode of urban practice, the literary modernity of Shanghai, and the urbanisms of arcades and corridors. Led by invited early-career scholars based in Shanghai—Chen Junnan, Zhuang Muyang and Chen Feiyue—these readings and discussions reanimated a residual site into an active, resonant urban stage of shared attention and sonic presence. Texts were projected to invite passersby into the orbit of the event, creating a porous threshold between focused participation and ambient theatricality.
