About the Event 关于活动

This lecture will start with the canonical case of Italian futurism, providing the audience with a historical context of how performance emerged as a form of aesthetic resistance from the highly capitalized countries in Western Europe since the turn of the 20th century. Through more case studies, this lecture will show that performance, rather than simply an aesthetic practice, is indeed politicized social interventions deliberated by the avant-gardists. It is deployed by the avant-garde artists to escape from or even fight against the establishment we call “modernity.” By the establishment of modernity, I will unravel its meanings from three aspects: ideology, aesthetic experience and production mechanism and further analyze what strategies these early “performances” adopt to counter modernity. Subsequently,this lecture will further discuss how global capitalism morphs and its changing cultural logics bring about the flourishing of “performance art” and “body art” in the post war era since the 1970s. This lecture will end with a venture to discuss what and why certain performances are visible in contemporary Shanghai in relation to the changing power dynamics of the logic of global/local cultural production and reproduction in this current moment.

本周将迎来“表演光谱”系列讲座最终场,这系列讲座我们从讨论身体的媒介化到身体抵抗阶级主义,从展演空间想象到展演策划实践,从多媒介创作到团体创作实践,在这一连串的讨论之后,我们逐渐看到问题的浮现。此次讲座,讲者将带领我们再次回顾意大利未来主义的经典案例,从历史脉络按图索骥,梳理表演(performance)作为一种美学方法,在二十世纪初如何从西欧资本主义发达国家的历史地表浮现。

从经典案例的分析当中,讲者将整理“表演”作为当时有意识的美学实践,其实是一种政治化的社会行动,是先锋艺术家们用来逃脱甚至对抗,我们称之为“现代性”(modernity)的“体制”。并进一步从意识形态、美感经验与生产机制三方面来论述历史先锋时期的“表演”采取了那些策略进行逃脱。最后考察世界资本主义如何在历史社会情景里变迁,改变了“文化生产的逻辑”让“先锋派艺术”在二战后的纽约跟欧、日都会转化为“行为艺术”与“身体艺术”。欲考察当代上海的“表演”实践,讲者将深入探讨1980年代以来全球资本主义又如何变迁,产生何种新的全球与在地的文化生产与再生产逻辑,以此来思索在当代上海“可见的”表演其意义与价值何在?是对“体制”的逃脱?还是新的全球文化生产体制下被收编的一部分?

About the Speaker 关于讲者

Jen-Hao Hsu (Walter) is an assistant professor in the Theatre Arts Department at Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He obtained his Ph.D. in Theatre Arts from Cornell University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Shanghai Theatre Academy. His research focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese theatres in relation to issues of modernity. He has published academic papers in first-ranked journals and books in Taiwan, China, Australia and Hong Kong. In addition to academic researches, he is also an active participant in the contemporary theatre scenes across the Taiwan Strait. He has published theatre reviews and journalistic pieces on theatre making in newspapers, magazines and online platforms.

许仁豪,台湾中山大学剧场艺术系助理教授. 美国康奈尔大学戏剧艺术博士, 上海戏剧学院博士后, 目前研究关注华文戏剧的现代性进程, 研究成果散见两岸一级学术期刊, 澳洲期刊以及香港大学论文集。除了学术研究之外,亦关注当代戏剧生产与美学问题,剧评以及讨论文章散见两岸专业期刊与网站。

About Series of Lecture of “Spectrum of Performance(ing) Arts” 关于“表演光谱”系列讲座

As art activities proliferate, performance and performing arts are evermore presented to the public, notably seen in art museums across recent years. The series of lectures of “Spectrum of Performance(ing) Arts” is not designed to invent some new vocabulary or definition, or to inquire “What is Performance (Performing)?”, but to examine how art in an unbound state flows and mutates into a spectrum with colorful connotations and more possibilities. It looks forward to the confluence and interaction of different realms of art, discussions from the artist, curator, researcher and scholar perspectives on issues such as the role of the platform, methods of artistic creation, ways of watching performances, the concept of curating, and the development of performance art and performing art under the globalization framework, as well as more dialogues in unexpected aspects between the speakers and audience.

This series of lectures is jointly initiated by RAM and Zhang Bing, an independent curator, and supported by Shanghai Artemis Art Center.

This lecture is co-organized by iPANDA and NMG.

随着艺术活动日渐蓬勃发展,行为与表演艺术更多地在大众面前呈现,特别近年来在美术馆里成为被关注的焦点。“表演光谱”系列讲座的策划不在于发明新的词汇或定义,或诘问“什么是表演?”,而是进一步探索、梳理艺术如何在不被“固着”的状态之下,流动、变异并形成一道肌理丰富的光谱,更多的可能性因此发生;并且希冀在不同艺术领域再度合流、交互作用的时刻,从艺术家、策划人、研究者、学者不同的角度去探讨:平台的角色、艺术创作方法、如何观看表演、策划概念、全球化框架下行为表演艺术的发展等等议题,也期待在讲者与观众的交流之间,开启更多不可预期的讨论面向。

本系列讲座由上海外滩美术馆与独立策展人张冰共同发起,并由上海至美艺术发展中心支持。
