"Cultural identity is a tapestry, but who weaves its threads?" — Eastern Margins

Between July and November 2024, the Rockbund Art Museum invites Eastern Margins to interrogate themes of cultural displacement, diasporic journeys and temporal (dis)connection through a three-part audiovisual intervention titled Phantom Thread.

London-based music label and collective with roots in both, Eastern Margins' creative practice is attuned to the relationship between the "diaspora" and the "home". Phantom Thread connects cultures we no longer live in, places we no longer inhabit and times that have come to pass. Each intervention threads into each other to re-interpret and reframe the previous one. In July, Dirty K and Jackson Kaki will dive into the excesses of Japan’s early 90s Heisei Era. In September, Post-Trance Cult gov-corp Minna-no-kimochi みんなのきもち will expand their operations with a sonic meditation, before the visceral explosion of FITNESSS in November.

In the past few decades, commercialisation in the music industry homogenised the ways in which cultures are disseminated through a linear timeline. The unique sounds of East Asian rave culture are often overlooked by global electronic music discourse. Later, abandoned Japanese electronic records from the 1990s flooded the second-hand market in China. Following his previous work on Tokyo Renaissance and Kazumi, Dirty K revisits sonics from the past to allow different possibilities to emerge again by focusing on cross-cultural pollinations. His latest release Myogi reclaims cultural excesses by blending the sonic strands of Japanese Hypertechno, Heisei rave, Korean Bokko Dance, Para Para, Taiwanese 90s EDM dancehall culture, Amapiano and Drill to present a localised, specific perspective on East Asian rave culture today. Rather than living with anxieties about the impotence of contemporary culture, Myogi revives and mutates native electronic dance music by embracing the potential of the past. For this performance at the Museum, Dirty K has produced new scores that will feed into Jackson Kaki's live visual to pull threads of nostalgia and cultural renaissance.

—— Eastern Margins
