Starting in October 2024, the AUUUUUDITORIUM program launched the project Becoming Rehearsal, a process-oriented and practice-based initiative aimed at broadening the discourse on performative practices. At the core of Becoming Rehearsal is an invitation extended to Shanghai-based artists and collectives to use the AUUUUUDITORIUM space for rehearsals, activities, and gatherings over the course of five months. Participants will engage in workshops led by three international artists: Bhenji Ra, Isaac Chong Wai and Sung Tieu.
On January 11st, artists Awc Chuwen Wang and Wenchu Ye and their collaborators conducted the performance Chitchat followed by a forum.
“Chitchat” was a series of event centered around the clinical condition of chronic pain, focusing on the narration of individual pain experiences.
Chronic pain is an ambiguous yet urgent condition. In everyday life, communication and sense of compassion regarding prolonged pain become even more fragile and inadequate under the tug-of-war of time and personal relationships. Learning how to live with chronic pain had to become both the focal point and the conclusion of discussions during treatment. Throughout personal experience, the lack of empathy between oneself and the external world requires patients to constantly reassess their body and the perception of it, engage in self-reflection, and express themselves to gain recognition, understanding, and sympathy.
The performance and forum held in AUUUUUDITORIUM aimed to explore following topics: What is it like to experience chronic pain? How to endure the pain while living a life, and under what circumstances, timeframes, motivations do we choose to talk about it? How to communicate painfulness with other people, and what kind of responses we hope to receive from others? Are we changed by pain? How does it reshape our daily identities, our lives, our self-perception, and our relationships with others?
