The HUGO BOSS ASIA ART, a new biennale award initiated by HUGO BOSS and Rockbund Art Museum, takes special focus on contemporary art in Asia to think, invent and represent the social, economical and cultural changes of Asia in a post-global era.
The inaugural edition of this prestigious award recognizes the works of Chinese emerging contemporary artists and will feature finalists in a group exhibition from which a winner will be selected. Meanwhile, HUGO BOSS ASIA ART activates an on-going research platform re-mapping the contemporary art in Asia with symposia, dialogues, lectures and publications, presenting, reflecting and contributing to the radical transformation and evolvement of art in this region.
Entitled ASIA ART MUTATIONS: LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL PRACTICE, this symposium sets out to address the challenges of art practices in Asia of this time. Among them, the questions of the language and social practice in the art have become eminent. In these two terms we wishes to analyze how the art in Asia demonstrates the richness and diversities of its areas, how specific, active, critical and powerful are its qualities, how contemporary art in Asia explores its own long and rich traditions, also its continuous, dynamic interactions between local and international contexts and forces,. This is one of the most exciting and beautiful facets of the art in Asia today which however generates complex questions and demands in-depth probes from all possible angles.
Taking advantage of the strong resource from the jury committee of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART but also complemented by curators, artists and scholars active in this area, this symposium sets up 4 units of round table discussions to bring up the challenges:
1) The media of art in Asia, the specificities and politics
2) Framing contemporary art and identity
3) The performativity and its contexts
4) Social intervention, as a means and as an end
With its wide-ranged and strong professional participants, this symposium presents a rare opportunity for critical reflecting and exchanges on the challenging issues of Asia art from both local and global perspectives. Together with the preceding and following curator dialogues, artist talks, presentations and performances, as well as the publications under the framework of Hugo Boss Asia Art education program, this symposium constitutes an important part of the on-going endeavour of the Award and Rockbund Art Museum to re-presenting and re-mapping Asia art.
