Philippe Parreno: Synchronicity

The Rockbund Art Museum will present a major solo exhibition by French artist, Philippe Parreno, his first in China. This exhibition is dedicated to the late Xavier Douroux whose influence on Parreno's career cannot be overstated. Curated by the Director of the museum, Larys Frogier, Parreno’s first exhibition in China will occupy four of the museum’s six floors, also extending to its seventh floor glass rooftop.

Shanghai, China, June 29, 2017 — Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai) and HUGO BOSS are delighted to announce the finalist artists for the third edition of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award for Emerging Asian Artists today. After much deliberation by the jury members, the finalist artists of HUGO BOSS ASIA ART 2017 are: Li Ming (China); Tao Hui (China); Yu Ji (China); and Robert Zhao Renhui (Singapore).

Song Dong: I Don’t Know the Mandate of Heaven

From January 21st to June 4th, Rockbund Art Museum will host a monographic exhibition by leading Chinese artist Song Dong. The exhibition, entitled “I Don’t Know the Mandate of Heaven”, will be the first major survey of Song’s work in mainland China in 8 years. The exhibition will include some of the artist’s best-known works that have been fundamental in establishing his career, as well as several rarely exhibited works. Felix Gonzalez-Torres

The Rockbund Art Museum is honored to present the first solo exhibition of the influential international artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996) in Greater China. From September 30th to December 25th, 2016, RAM will host a comprehensive exhibition of work by the late American artist, who is renowned for his unconventional methodology and poignant sensitivity. The unique nature of his work takes this exhibition beyond a retrospective; it constitutes a genuine renewal of his art.

Tell Me a Story: Locality and Narrative

“Tell Me A Story” is a group exhibition presented by Rockbund Art Museum. The exhibition features 11 artworks by artists from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Through re-investigating the history, culture and heritage of different locations in East and Southeast Asia, the artists explore, as well as construct, narratives relating to the effects of globalization on local Asian communities.

Heman Chong: Ifs, Ands, or Buts

“Ifs, Ands, or Buts” is the first exhibition presented by Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) in 2016 and the first museum solo exhibition in mainland China for Singaporean artist Heman Chong. The exhibition investigates spaces between text and images, producing new ways of relating the two through 7 new works commissioned specifically by Rockbund Art Museum.

HUGO BOSS ASIA ART 2015

Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) is delighted to partner with HUGO BOSS for the second edition of HUGO BOSS ASIA ART, Award for Emerging Asian Artists, in 2015. Following the success of its inaugural edition in 2013, the award returns with a focus on Greater China but this year it will also encompass Southeast Asia. The shortlisted artists will be announced at the end of June and their works will be shown in a group exhibition at RAM from 30 October 2015 – 3 January 2016.

Chen Zhen: Without going to New York and Paris, life could be internationalized

This May, Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) will celebrate its 5th anniversary with an ambitious new exhibition “Chen Zhen: Without going to New York and Paris, life could be internationalised,” which will run from May 30 – October 7, 2015. Organized by RAM, curated by international curator Hou Hanru, with Xu Min, the long-term life and work partner of Chen Zhen, as artistic consultant, the show will feature large-scale installations, as well as sketches and notes by this Shanghai-born conceptual artist

Mark Bradford: Tears of a Tree

RAM is pleased to present the first major museum exhibition in Asia of the celebrated Los Angeles-based artist Mark Bradford. Commissioned specifically for this presentation, three monumental collage paintings will fill each of the gallery floors of the museum. These exuberant new works titled The Tears of a Tree, Falling Horses and Lazy Mountain are inspired by the artist’s visits to Shanghai and what he found to be the dynamic melding of disparate cultures, economies and functions in the city.

UGO RONDINONE: BREATHE WALK DIE

Rockbund Art Museum is thrilled to introduce the very first exhibition in China of the internationally acclaimed artist Ugo Rondinone, born in 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland, and living in New York since 1997. Ugo Rondinone’s oeuvre takes up a unique position in the contemporary art scene and his contribution in revisiting the codes and the histories of the visual arts has been exceptional.

Advance through Retreat

The exhibition aims to look at traditional media from a different angle. It sets out to present artistic positions using traditional media and procedures, such as divination, the game, gambling and traditional strategies— for instance, 'advance through retreat'— in order to develop autonomous languages that utter positions of resistance to the assimilating tendency and the power structures generated and maintained by the lingua franca.

Bharti Kher: Misdemeanours

Contemporary painter and sculptor Bharti Kher has been engaged with the varying art historical traditions of the readymade, minimalism and abstraction (through repeated gestures and forms), as well as mythology and narrativity for the past twenty years. This fifteen-year survey of Kher’s practice from the early years of the 21st century through to the present constitutes a synthesized overview into a complex and evolving worldview and the artist’s first major solo exhibition in Asia.

A Potent Force: Duan Jianyu and Hu Xiaoyuan

A Potent Force brings together the work of two strongly individual Chinese artists, Duan Jianyu and Hu Xiaoyuan, both of whom happen to be female. The distinct sensibilities that they each bring to their art are an amalgam of their respective life experiences, of the incidental features of their personal background and the environs in which they grew up.

Time Traveler

Time Traveler hopes to evoke visually spatial memories of the era of the Shanghai Museum, presenting the overlap of two times and spaces — a natural history and culture muse of the 1930s and a contemporary art museum of 2012, reuniting the two spaces that stand at either end of this temporal axis. All the artists participating in this exhibition have in the past or are still currently working with classical material, dead forms and historical incidents as their mode of expression in their art.

Paola Pivi: Share, But It's Not Fair
