HUGO BOSS ASIA ART intends to combine an art award with curatorial practice and a continuous theoretical research platform for inventive and collaborative projects. “We consider Asia as a construction and as a question to investigate rather than a monolithic area and fixed identities, and decisive social, economical and cultural mutations in Asia generate and request constant re-mapping of the contemporary arts. Furthermore, economical and cultural growths in Asia are based on different models and diverse contexts which deserve to be specifically analyzed. Under globalization, the interrelations between the commonplace and the singular should cultivate diversity and contradiction as the basis of our representations of reality.” Mr. Larys Frogier, Chair of the jury of HUGO BOSS ASIA ART and the Director of Rockbund Art Museum, stated.

  • About the HUGO BOSS Arts Program

The HUGO BOSS arts program was initiated in 1995, concentrating on contemporary arts. Together with the Guggenheim Foundation, HUGO BOSS established the HUGO BOSS PRIZE in 1996: an internationally renowned award within the field of contemporary art, to which there is an enduring commitment. Since the start of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award in 2013, promoting the exhibition of contemporary artworks of emerging Chinese artists is a core cultural mission for HUGO BOSS.

Alongside numerous exhibitions, HUGO BOSS also supports artists and their works at the Venice Biennale and has enjoyed a creative alliance with the Salzburg Festival. The HUGO BOSS ArtPass exclusively grants the holder free admission to a range of distinguished museums around the world. For several years now, selected artists have produced exclusive designs for the passes, making them coveted collector’s items and miniature works of art. For example, the ArtPass 2011 was created by the Chinese artist Cao Fei, who was also nominated for the HUGO BOSS PRIZE 2010. Further information can be found on www.hugoboss.com.

This award takes special focus on contemporary art in Asia to think, invent and represent the changes of Asia under globalization. It intends to combine an art award, meanwhile it is a curatorial practice and a continuous theoretical research platform for inventive and collaborative projects.

HUGO BOSS ASIA ART is passionately involved in favour of movement, interchange and openness as the basic conditions for the free circulation of ideas and works.

HUGO BOSS ASIA ART chose to promote art as a fundamental critical space for debating the future of contemporary art in both local and international scopes. We argue that art is above all a practice for disensus rather than consensus, on the basis of which cultural exchanges and learning process can be forged: creating space for discussion, stimulating thought, and imagining symbols, allegories and all the other intrinsic metaphors of cultural creativity and social dynamism.
