Drawing on RAM’s unique spaces and excellent exhibition programs, Live@RAM is dedicated to artists active at the forefront of performative practices – practices involving the use of body, which may otherwise be known as contemporary dance, performance art, sound art, new media, experimental music/theatre, or inter-disciplinary projects, under different circumstances.

RAM Talk: The Theme of Loneliness in World Literature and Art

By taking examples from the literature works of the greatest poets and writers of all times, including Sima Qian, Du Fu, Su Shi, Lu Xun, Shen Congwen, Franz Kafka, Ernesto Sabato, Gabriel García Márquez, and Carson McCullers, and the artworks of Vincent Van Gogh, Zhu Da and Xu Wei, the speaker will explore the various expressions, allegorical and symbolic meanings, and aesthetic values of loneliness as a prevalent theme in literature and art works of different countries.

Foucault’s concept of the heterotopia did not gain much attention until the 1980s when it received wide response, particularly in relation to topics in the context of identity politics in the United States, such as ethnic politics, feminist movements, and homosexual movements. The practice part of the talk deals with the heterotopia imagination, political struggle for identity, interventional artistic practice in public spaces.
