Around the early 2000s, a movement of independent filmmaking sparked in Kuala Lumpur. Films from the movement challenged the regularities of Malaysia’s national cinema. Adapting styles from global art cinema, filmmakers from multiethnic group recollect images and memories of Kuala Lumpur. Among them, Chinese Malaysian filmmakers actively rethink their images in the cinema made in Malaysia.

In the context of the “Shortest Day” which was launched by France in 2011 and now takes place in over 50 countries all over the world every year around the 21st December, EU Short Festival Asia (EUSFF Asia) is coming back to Shanghai with new screenings and workshop activities. The short films have been selected by the European Film academy and Unifrance. They will be screened in Rockbund Art Museum.
