With dancer’s sensitivity to the body, Yu Yanan observes the subtle relation between people, society and nature by studying the body, which is also her way to perceive the world and the universe.In her artist-in-residence program,Yanan will express her opinions by illustrating the relation between people, society and nature she has detected in Chen Zhen’s works. She will explore the topic about restriction through two different presentation forms.

Taking book A History of Exhibitions-Shanghai 1979-2006, an archive of an artist-organised exhibitions in Shanghai, talk will look at the early artists organized exhibitions in Shanghai during 1980’s and importance of artists friendship and solidarity in times when there was no art infrastructure or so called institutionalization of friendship that was of great importance for many local contexts.

Chen Zhen’s works represent his diagnosis and prescription for the morbidity of human nature, culture and society as an artist; and they also reflected his experiences and thoughts regarding human body, psychology, diseases and medical science during his struggle with his condition as a terminal patient from a family of doctors. We believe that to interpret Chen Zhen’s practice experience and art works from a medical perspective is a return to the humanistic nature of arts and medical science.
