The tradition of lighting up lanterns on the Lantern Festival, namely on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar year in the lunar calendar, dates back to Han Dynasty. By Tang Dynasty, lantern-watching became even more popular. Lanterns were hung up in palace as well as streets. Besides, tall lantern wheels, lantern towers and lantern trees would also be set up.
