Lecture: Exploring the Booming Experimental Comics of Chinese New Generations: a Case Study of Special Comic Project

The experimental comics of Chinese new generations were originated from the gradually developed, matured and separated web based comics-communities in the beginning of this century. Benefited from the internet, the accumulation of information has become increasingly convenient and some comics-lovers started actively concerning, editing and spreading European art comics. They formed web based communities such as Special Comic and Green that focus on the creation of experimental comics. Most of the new generation were born after the announcement of Reform and Opening Policy and grew up with the issues and confusions that were brought by Chinese characterized capitalization and globalization. Animation and comics were the main spiritual support in their childhood, and later had evolved into the major visual language that they are most familiar with.
During the middle and late period of the 90s, large amount of young people were involved in the creation of comics as amateurs, which even turned out to be a new trend at that time. However, due to the lack of thinking and spiritual substance as the commercial comics which served as a source of these creations and the immaturity of the authors, this trend was doomed to be an extension of the mediocre and tedious commercial interest.
