Nine Years of Downstream Garage —The Present and Future of A Cultural Insistence
Mar 8, 2014 Saturday 15:00 - 17:00
2F Y.W.C.A Building (Shanghai 133 Yuanmingyuan Road)
In addition to ongoing artistic creation and performance throughout the years, the space has hosted events such as theater and film festivals providing the city with a glimpse into a precious alternative cultural life and its creative energy. Its insistence on enabling free expression for a culture outside of the commercial and mainstream was never an easy endeavor, and it is now sadly, yet hopefully only temporarily, coming to an end.
This gathering is initiated by friends who were involved in the organization of Downstream Garage and those who have created, performed and lived it. Wang Jingguo, scholars who have supported its activities, artists who have spent a great amount of time working and creating there will join the audience members in a short retrospective of past experiences and discuss the potential fate and future of spaces like this in our present time and situation in Shanghai.
The program will include an exhibition of posters and festival programs from past performances, and performance video excerpts. Invited guests include senior playwright Li Yingning, associate research fellow of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Tao Qingmei, and Swedish theater scholar and director Maja-Stina Wang.
Free admission, reservation is required.
