Action Asia VOL.6 New Workers Art: Expand Cultural Subjectivity in Village

New Worker Art was founded on the International Workers' Day, 1st May 2002, and previously named Young Migrant Worker Art Troupe. Since the establishment, the Troupe has released seven original music albums and several movies, documentaries and plays; organized and launched annual New Year’s Gala for migrant workers. There are two specific characteristics of the artwork by the Troupe: - for workers, which lyrics as a reflection of their daily lives; - a strong relationship between their artworks and social practice, such as behind scene stories of the birth of Workers Home.
Xu Duo will talk about his experience in their new workers’ culture development in China, including song and script writing, theatre performance, establishment of The Culture and Art Museum of Migrant Workers, Migrant Worker Art Festival and Migrant Workers New Year's Gala. Following by Wang Dezhi and his reading of Italian film Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves) from a labor worker’s view by showing his editing version. Song Yi, who went to Pi Village for observation and attempted to become a participant himself. The lecture will carry out a discussion on how these new worker artists finding their way in developing cultural subjectivity through art; their own interpretations of art.
