Mike Leibenluft Explains What “Documentary Theater” Is Anyway
“Documentary theater” or “verbatim drama” is a theatrical form that is currently quite popular in Europe and the United States. This type of original playmaking involves integrating interviews, historical research, and archival footage to investigate a given topic. A mix of playwriting and journalism, documentary theater challenges our understanding of drama as a “fictional” art form and forces us to consider the subjectivity of artistic expression. In this evening’s event, director and Shanghai Theatre Academy instructor Michael Leibenluft will screen a film version of his documentary theater piece “The Student Body.”* The film explores the history of Yale university with a particular focus on gender and sexuality. Following the film, Michael will lead a discussion about this dramatic form and discuss his current documentary theater project with students from the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Finally, he will engage audience members in several interactive exercises that can be used to develop this type of performance.
* Please note: this film contains mature themes and brief nudity. For mature audiences only. The film is in English but will be screened with Chinese subtitles.... Read More
