【RAM Talk】How to Get Fun and More out of Contemporary Art
Apr 23, 2016 Saturday 16:00 - 18:00
1F, Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai 20 Huqiu Road)
“Ifs, Ands, or Buts” is an interesting contemporary art exhibition, where the artist designed a riddle for audiences to solve and the fun lies in finding the answer. Shen Qilan will share her experience of visiting exhibitions in the past several years and tell us how to have fun in contemporary art exhibitions and how to get the most out of them. For contemporary artists, ideas matter the most and it is very challenging to be profound and fun at the same time. For example, Marcel Duchamp created great and fun works; Joseph Beuys also created great works, but they were not so fun. The relationship between audiences and contemporary art goes beyond appreciating and being appreciated; it should be more fun, that’s to say, audiences should get more out of contemporary art besides ideas. The creation of contemporary art coexists and relies on the presence of audiences. A riddle shall lose its purpose if no one is eager to figure it out. At Heman Chong’s exhibition, let’s find out what is so fun about the exhibition and discuss how to get the most out of such a rich bounty of contemporary art.
Shen Qilan, receiving her Ph.D. from University of Münster, Germany, is a famous writer, art critic and curator. She is the founder of “UnderstandAqiran”, an art WeChat official account platform. Currently she is editorial board member of Book Town magazine. She was the editorial director of Art World magazine; Editor-in-chief of art department at Insight Media publishing house. She is chief adviser and co-author of Europe-China Cultural Compass --Orientation for Cultural Cooperation between China and Europe. Her book Life at My Own Pace was a best-seller. She was invited to speak at TEDx. She was on the academic committee of ASIA NOW Paris Asian Art Fair 2015. She has contributed to the art columns on Bazaar Art and Noblesse. She is among the social mentors who are invited by Fudan University for its “Siyuan Program”.
Ifs, Ands, or Buts, Heman Chong’s solo exhibition, adopts the approach of conceptual art to point out the interventions of languages and words upon real life and question the various norms that define our ordinary lifestyle, especially the authorities and mechanisms using knowledge and information as their media. The exhibition contains bookstore, TV (witty skit), newspapers, Wikipedia, literature classics and of course, gossip, among other elements. We invite Chen Tong, btr, Shen Qilan and Zhu Zhu, who have also reflected on our age through years of writing, to give talks related to this exhibition. They will discuss it from the standpoint of their respective research fields and share with the audience their take on the exhibition. The four talks will kick off with speaker guided tour.
Unlike the usual talks at RAM, this series will start with exhibition tours where speakers will see and discuss the exhibited works with the audiences. After the tour, speakers will share with the audiences their understanding of the exhibition from the perspective of their respective research areas.
