Growing from the idea of a sculptural costume installation, the eastern and western body is “neutralized” through fabric and costume.
The costume - the fabric, the design and the cut - shape their bodies their movements and their interactions.
The piece is an ongoing metamorphosis of body and costume/sculpture. A path through different ?landscapes“ of form and meaning, casual and ritual.
Of the costumes and sculpture designed for the Tanzcompagie Rubato in Shanghai, Jonathan Baldock says, “My practise continually references the human form. Therefore, it seemed a very natural progression to place a ‘live’ human body within the work”. Taking inspiration from references as disparate as the cloaked monk of Medieval Europe, Chinese Opera and Modernist abstraction, the outfits consider the idea of costume as sculpture and painting, which through the movement of dance become live painterly forms of expression....
