Sennheiser Greater China and Night at Ram present part 3 of the interview/ performance series: “The Art of Music”: The Shanghai Cotton Club Special!
In this 3rd session of the Art of Music we will explore the recent history of Shanghai music and the style that makes this city so musically unique in China. 3 is the magic number tonight: Where are we headed from here where the back ends of east and west meet- which way is the future? In a fresh new trio session 3 musicians from the Cotton Club band will explore a musical world beyond the daily grind in the big city after the sun sets when most people are off to sleep and while others seek the neon bliss and the more blue harmonies of the club sounds.
!The Renaissance of live music performance in modern Shanghai finally began to take hold in the mid-nineties after the winds of change whirled through the initial modernization of China in the eighties. All sorts of doors were opening a crack at a time when Tony Huang from a prominent Shanghainese family in 1998 decided to turn the controls of his recently opened rock and dice bar over to US musician Matt Hardy, renaming the club after the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem in New York City. Matt lured his old friend Greg Smith from his home turf of Salt Lake City, Utah en route to Moscow where he had been gigging a few years and sharing a flat with David Byrne’s girlfriend who regularly visited and sat in with his band there.
