Speculative realism is no doubt the most cutting-edge and avant-garde trend sweeping the western academic circle in recent ten years. Blending continental philosophy and analytic philosophy, it strives to overcome the mainstream of anti-realism in thought development in the 20th century and goes back to the basic ontology problem again.
This lecture will start from Quentin Meillassoux, a representative figure of speculative realism, and his masterpiece After Finitude, and then analyse thoroughly the artists, works and exhibitions that are related to speculative realism, such as Gregory Chantonsky’s Archaeologies of the Future, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s experimental documentary film Homo Sapiens, the exhibition “Le bord du monde” held at the Palais de Tokyo, 2014 Taipei Biennial “The Great Acceleration” curated by Nicolas Bourriaud, and “Shanghai Project” which has been fermented recently. Thought is not just the interpretation of art, and art is not merely the diagram of thought as well. Through the dramatic as well as drastic experiment of symbiosis, we intend to realise and extend the plane of immanence in the most incredible way. Looking forward to the becoming event of thinking-image once again.
