Since 2005 when the contemporary art market started to heat up, some independent art spaces, together with commercial galleries and private museums, have been established that support innovation and experimental practices in contemporary art with their unique perspectives. They are pioneers in art spaces in China, providing a platform for emerging artists and art projects. However, as the contemporary art scene becomes more and more commercial, these spaces are faced with a hostile environment and unclear future. Their roles are also blurred. Are they independent spaces, or non-profit organizations, or a transitional form? “Art China” hopes to have a sincere dialogue on the features and reality of the alternative spaces as well as on the experiences of such spaces surviving in Hong Kong, Taiwan and other cities in China.
