  • About the drama

    About absurdism and work

The word "absurdism" is directed to the condition of his life itself. The first time Albee won Pulitzer Prize was for Everything in the Garden. The play The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia received a Tony Award. All his works are about the discussion and introspection of human morality and naturalization, and they are a sort of resistance against reputation and materialist. The ultimate absurdity mixed with self destiny exists in every single play, even among goat.

    About story

In the play, Martin, a successful architect who has just turned fifty, leads an ostensibly ideal life with his loving wife and son. But when he confides to his best friend Ross that he is also in love with a goat (named Sylvia), he sets in motion events that will destroy his family and leave his life in tatters.

  • About Author

Edward Albee (1928—) is an American playwright, was born in Washington, D.C. (one popular belief is that he was born somewhere in Virginia). He was adopted by a wealthy family two weeks later, and Albee's adoptive father owned several theaters. Here the young Albee first gained familiarity with the theater and celebrities. At his early age, Albee had already showed great interest in literature creation. He started writing poems when he was 12, and tried to write plays later on. During the year he studied at Trinity College, he performed a play of Maxwell Anderson, since then he got familiar with the other aspect besides theater celebrities. He was dismissed by a high school, within a year, a military academy had dismissed Albee as well. His formal education continued at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was expelled in 1947. Albee moved into New York's Greenwich Village, where he supported himself with various jobs, at the same time, he wrote articles for radio stations. In 1958, Albee wrote his first major play The Zoo Story. When no New York theater would agree to stage it, Albee sent the play to an old friend in Europe. The play was first produced in Berlin, subsequently staged in many other cities in Germany. After its success abroad, The Zoo Story was also presented at Broadway, which made him gain lots of reputation, but meanwhile, there were quite a few criticisms. The play for which he is best known, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was produced in New York in 1962. Immediately, it was popular and controversial. The play received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and was adapted into a movie afterwards.... Read More

  • About V+ Readers

Reading scripts would be considered as a scandal for pragmatists

Based on this reason, we determined to keep this tradition in the air

We read those egotistic and imperfect new works

Giving respectful treatment to those lonely but severe behaviors

We read those masterpieces and failed works which are lasting even longer than our lives

Reviving characters both awaken and asleep

Humbling the proud individuals in front of the ancient rituals and prosperous thoughts

    There is no professional actors

There is no amateur artists either

    V+ Readers

Tribute to those who are defective and imperfect

    About reader

This is a brand new collision discussing about the definition of professional and non-professional, occupational and non-occupational. We only want to confront the play itself,  trying to look for the reality there.

    About director

It must be the order of God which lead me to return to the Rockbund Art Museum. The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia is the latter part of 摧毁, if you are lucky enough to have watched the first half of the play, you should never miss the corresponding work a year later. V+ Readers and the director are looking forward to your coming.
