The assembly line… the nightmares of the young women workers… smog…. these things and more appear in this Grass Stage production, a play about workers and industry. To have become the “World Factory” might seem to be a source of pride for those nations that have done so. But this achievement rests on a foundation of noxious and miserable working conditions and environmental destruction. Given the history of social upheaval from the Industrial Revolution to the present, can China confidently and rationally explain how, and on what basis, we have continued the forward march of the “world factory”? The difficulties on answering these questions, are not only due to the intractability of the problems around industry and of labor, but because rural society is also crucially imbricated here. Central all of this is China’s new class structure today, and its huge gap in between.
“The World Factory” builds on the Grass Stage Theater’s ten year tradition of a distinctive theatrical aesthetic shaped by the particular collaborative practices that have evolved over time: discussion, investigation, documenting, and workshops. At the heart of their compositional practice is a passionate quest for the real of a given situation, a quest that comprises varied and conflicting reflections, encounters, and feelings, thus producing a play that itself is formally disjunctive. They see theatre as the hope for another kind of life.
