Old fellow Zhu is a steam train driver in Jalainur Open-cut Coal Mine, and his apprentice Li Zhizhong is a signalman. They have been working together for many years and are inseparable no matter at work or in life. Zhu has worked in the coal mine for thirty years and is subject to retirement.
One day, Zhizhong found the steam train driver is not Zhu, who decided to leave the coal mine in advance and go to his daughter and son-in-law that live close to the boarder between China and Russia.
In order to follow Zhu, Zhizhong is on the way as well. Zhu persuades Zhizhong to return to Jalainur many times, but emotionally Zhu is uncertain if he really wants to get rid of Zhizhong.
