Talk: Dream and tumult: The absurdity inside the work of Samuel Beckette and Ugo Rondinone
Oct 11, 2014 Saturday 19:30 - 21:30
2F, Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai 20 Huqiu Road)
Beckett’s writings (especially his writings for the theatre) have been labeled as absurd, especially the representative piece En Attendant Godot, which has been considered as the foundation of absurdist theatre. Ugo Rondinone’s commissioned works for the Rockbund Art Museum likewise embodies the experience of the absurd: dream-like colors and rays of light outline a ultra-realistic atmosphere, roaming and meditating clowns transform the entirety of the space into an illusionary but real theater. How should one understand the relationship between these two artists’ practices? Starting from the three abstracts “Masquerade of identities”,” A sensibility to nothingness”, “Beckett’s walk”, Prof. Jiang Yuhui will articulate more from his research.
Jiang Yuhui is associate professor of philosophy at East China Normal University (Shanghai). He is the Chinese translator of Deleuze&Guattari's Mille Plateaux. He is also the author of Deleuze's Aesthetics of Body (2007) and Truth and Painting: Merleau Ponty and Chinese Landscape Paintings(2013). He is currently working on a book entitled Deleuze in Art.
