SAVAKA VOL.7: (Un)amplified objects
Mar 22, 2014 Saturday 19:00 - 21:00
2F Y.W.C.A Building (Shanghai 133 Yuanmingyuan Road)
My main instrument for the recent years has been the amplified and unamplified turntables with objects. I have no background of DJing or collecting vinyl records. For me, turntable is less a record player than a electro-magnetic pick-up to amplify objects’s vibration or a resonator of certain things without any amplification. When things are amplified (or represented), then they lose their sonic presence; amplifier and speaker take over the presence and the sound gets more objectified. Things maintain their aural presence only when they are not reproduced through microphones/amplifier/speakers. It remains local, but very subjective, that is, highly subjected to the listener’s position and condition. This paradoxical condition is always my point of departure as an improvising musician or an active practitioner of listening.
