The feel of the finished film has a lot to do with my sentimentsat the time. Creatively speaking, Mu Wu Jia and I had chosen each other.
It is a rather casual film. I had gone to Pingxiang in Guangxi with a huge idea for a story, never expecting that the tiny city would give me so much inexplicable sense of intimacy. The story has nothing to do with Guangxi but it has the same feel and the things it expresses are ones that happen naturally in Pingxiang.
I yearn for freedom. I constantly feel trapped, I’m constantly seeking release. But in our society, who isn’t? It was under the influence of these sentiments that I crossed paths naturally with Ma Wu Jia. I find a piece of my spirit in him; a part of me manifests itself in him. But I’m not capable of his action in the end. I don’t share his passion about certain things. There is still a lot I can’t let go of. I can only express my thought film.
I think Ma Wu Jia is a dazzling character. Because he lives in his own world, because he believes in it, and because he dearly loves it. It is his choice to kill his mother. We have no right to interfere. The price he pays is also his own choice or perhaps it never even crossed his mind. But this is his charm.... Read More
