Vanessa Beecroft's work has always focused on the female body, initially using young women and later professional models. The beginning of her career coincided with the emergence into public attention of phenomena which had previously received little press: eating disorders—prevalently affecting girls and women—such as anorexia and bulimia. These themes, rendered abstract and subliminal in her performances, have remained a common denominator in her artistic quest. In her performances, the models have to remain motionless and mute, objects to be viewed by the audience. There is hardly ever any action in her performances: the mere exhibition of the body is Beecroft's true statement.
